USD to Host Scripps Spelling Bee Final

South Dakota’s best spellers will compete at USD to determine who will represent South Dakota at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

VERMILLION, S.D. – The University of South Dakota will host the state’s top spellers for the Scripps Spelling Bee state final Saturday, March 18. The competition will begin at 10 a.m.

“The USD Scripps Spelling Bee program offers a highly-competitive program outside of athletics that recognizes academic success,” said Cheryl Havermann, coordinator of the state spelling bee. “The program offers K-8 students in South Dakota an opportunity to think on their feet and public speaking experience. The purpose of the spelling bee is to help students improve their spelling skills, increase vocabulary and learn language concepts, all of which increase literacy.”

After advancing at the school and regional level, the state’s best spellers compete at USD to determine who will represent South Dakota at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. May 28-June 2. Last year’s winner was 8th grader Logan Gregg of Vermillion Middle School.

The Scripps Spelling Bee has been sponsored by USD since 2012.
